24 Oct Sawis, Gwis Registration & Reporting Requirement
In terms of Annexure 1 of the NEM:WA Act, 2008 (Act No. 59 of 2008) published in GNR 625, anyone who conducts the following activities is required to register on the National, Provisional and/or Municipality Waste Information Systems where applicable:
- Landfilling general waste more than 50m2 size of facility with a volume of less than 25, 000 tons
- Landfilling hazardous waste 1 ton per day
- Waste Collectors
- Waste Transporters (Section 25 of NEM: WA No.59 of 2008)
- Waste Recyclers
- Those who collect, store, treat and dispose waste
- Anyone involved in waste trading and waste processors
The South African Waste Information System (SAWIS) is a software tool used to register the above-mentioned persons in possession of Waste Management Licenses, relevant Environmental Authorations and permits.
PROVINCIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Take note that each province has its own provincial waste system established in terms of section 62 of the NEM:WA Act, as per relevant Provincial Regulations. For instance:
- All waste entities operating within Gauteng are to register on the Gauteng Waste Information System (GWIS).
- All waste entities operating within the Western Cape must register on the Integrated Pollutant and Waste Information System (iPWIS).
- Other provinces are yet to launch their systems.
