24 Oct Waste Compliance: Did You Know?
In terms of the GNR 921 of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (NEM:WA), 2008 (Act No.59 of 2008) as amended, anyone who is involved in one of the below activities may be required by, law, to have a waste license. According to NEM: WA 2008, (Act 59 of 2008), the following activities are listed as those requiring a Waste License.
- Disposal of:
- General waste,
- Hazardous waste
- and Domestic waste in un-serviced areas
- Treatment of waste
- Storage of waste
- Re-Use, recycling and recovering waste
- Waste transporters, collectors and processors waste
Anyone who is in contravention with the Act is liable on conviction to imprisonment for a period not exceeding 15 years, an appropriate fine or both fine an imprisonment. For more information on the Waste management license application process.
